Professional Development

Being based in Europe for a year allowed me to explore a wide range of cultural and historical sites, while also networking with international colleagues at in-person and virtual workshops and conferences.

Sites by the Numbers

Since the end of my second year through the end of my third year, I visited 116 cultural sites in 47 cities or towns across 10 different countries.

I use the term “sites” to refer broadly to museums of all kinds, zoos, and landmarks or historic structures of great cultural significance. I aimed specifically to visit anthropological and ethnographic collections whenever possible to assess different approaches to decolonization and the display of culturally sensitive materials.

I also visited the conservation labs of 16 different institutions in Switzerland, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
