Wool, cotton, metal paillettes, metal closures

This ensemble consists of an off-white cotton and wool sleeveless column dress, matching cuffs, and collar. The dress is decorated with horizontal bands of cotton pile, silver paillettes, and brocaded bands in navy, red, orange, and green wool with matching cuffs and collar. The dress straps are made of the brocaded bands. The cuffs and collar are made using the same off-white cotton/wool material used in the dress and edged with fringe.

Condition Before Treatment

The dress and accessories were in good condition, with only minor areas of staining and tears. There were numerous small losses caused by pest activity in the wool areas of the dress. The collar was frayed along the lower edge.

Custom Support

In addition to stabilizing the frayed and damaged areas of the garment, it was necessary to created a custom-padded mannequin to support the weight of the dress during display. Due to the slim fit of the dress, it was necessary to work from a Stockman adolescent form and build up necessary padding at the bust and hips.

A custom support made of Fosshape was also added to the neck to prevent the collar from sagging. The cuffs are not included in the display.

After treatment

Condition After Treatment

The dress remains in excellent aesthetic and structural condition. Areas of damage and unravelling are now stable following stitched treatment, and both the dress and collar are fully supported for longterm display.
