Jama, Before treatment

Jama Ensemble

India (likely worn by Maharaja Jaswant Singh, GCSI)

1879

Victoria and Albert Museum

Cotton with metal embellishments

This ensemble includes a jama, kurta and paijama, kammerband, two scarves, and a turban. The jama and four of the associated textiles are dyed using red dye in a pink spattered pattern. All the pieces are decorated with either gota or metal-wrapped threads. It is the largest jama and most complete ensemble of this type in the V&A collection.

Condition Before Treatment

All of the pieces are in good structural condition overall but fair aesthetic condition. All pieces are creased. Additionally, there is uneven fading on the sashes and jama. The turban and parts of the jama are extremely yellowed. The gota on most pieces is severely unraveled.

THIS TREATMENT IS ONGOING. MORE INFORMATION WILL BE ADDED SHORTLY.
